Becoming a Marketer

Following is part one of an interview with Cheryl Benton, owner of 747 Marketing.  Their website says, "We've built a consulting business that helps our clients gain unfair competitive advantages by outwitting the other guys."  Visit Cheryl Benton’s website simply by Googling 747 Marketing.  Q. Why did you choose marketing as a career?A. Actually, I didn't choose it as a career. It chose me. I started out thinking I was going to be a high school English teacher. I believe John Lennon said, "Life happens when you're making other plans." I was substitute teaching, because there was such a glut of English teachers. I was there until the end of the school year, and I thought, "I'll have to go back to substituting in the fall." I thought, "I'll get some kind of summer job." But, if you told businesses you were going back to teaching in the fall, they wouldn't pay anything. So, I thought, "The next place I go, I'll act like I'll stay here forever." And, that turned out to be a 10 year summer job in a technology firm. I got into advertising there. I became the Ad Director, and then the Marketing Director. After 10 years, I left there and started my own ad agency on Long Island. I had that for 10 years, and it was acquired.Q. What made you decide to start your own agency? A. I was on the client side, and we were working with agencies. I was at a point where I wanted to try the agency side. It would be more interesting and challenging. And, ironically, people were saying, "Even though you've been a marketing person for 10 years, you haven't had experience on the agency side." So, I was finding that the agency door was tough. At that time, some of the big agencies had training programs, but my time for that had long since gone by. I thought, "At this point, I don't want to start all over in my career." So, I said, "I'm going to start my own agency and figure it out along the way."Q. Did you find it fairly easy to pick things up, or was it challenging, or stressful?A. Yes, all of the above. Whenever you're starting something new -- and especially when you're going from something very secure -- all of a sudden, you take this giant leap into uncharted waters. This is particularly true when it's an entrepreneurial project. But, there's a lot of adrenaline, and you have to believe you can do it. My first client was the firm I was working for, and then I had a couple of clients. That was terrific, because they all believed enough in me to allow me to do that. They were enormously helpful. I learned, and part of growing and doing anything is making mistakes. And, saying, "OK, what did I learn from that?" Then, you pick up and move ahead. For example, when you're starting up something, any client who came your way, you say, "Oh, I can do that," or, "I'll take that on." Then, you start to realize that you have to focus your effort more. I found that it took as much time, if not more time, to handle a very small client with a very tiny budget, than it did to pursue clients with bigger budgets. That was a big lesson: When to say no, and when to say, "OK, I'm not going to say yes to this kind of client -- even if it would provide some short-term income. I need to focus on the bigger things that will ultimately be more beneficial." Q. You've worked in Manhattan most of your career. What strengths are required to succeed in this competitive environment?A. You've got to be willing to accept failures, pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start over again. In Manhattan or Boise, if you love what you do, and you keep at it, you will succeed.Q. The Manhattan work world has changed since you started. Tell us a change that affected you, and how you adapted. A. Now, with computers and the Blackberry, it's the total commingling of your business and personal life. You're always on 24/7 call, even on vacation. You're getting off a plane and checking your Blackberry. And, there's a good and bad side to that. The good side is: You can work remotely and you can handle certain business things a lot easier than you could 20 years ago, when you had to physically be in the office to do something. The downside is: You're never free! (Laughs.) Q. You've been active in many associations and groups. Did they help you with transitions?A. Yes, it's been great to be in them. I've been involved in advertising industry associations. They've been great for a number of reasons. Early on in your career it's fantastic because you can reach out to other people. It expands your network. I've been in the B/PAA (Business and Professional Advertising Association) and the BMA (Business Marketing Association). Some of my very closest friends are from those organizations. We're friends to this day.You find you have a nationwide network. And that is so critical because when you're ready to do something new, you sit down and say, "Who is in my network?" I would say to anyone at any stage: Get involved with groups in your industry. In your younger days you're taking from those groups. And, when you get more experienced in whatever you do, you will give back to those groups. Q. You continue to have a very successful career. To you, what is career success?A. I think it's loving what you're doing. I've always felt very fortunate that I've always loved what I was getting paid to do. I always loved advertising, I loved marketing, and I love what I do now at The Three Tomatoes Newsletter. I think that's the key to anyone's success. I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone who has been successful in an endeavor who has hated what they do. It doesn't mean every day you get up saying, "Oh, my gosh, this is great." Obviously, there are lots of days you get up and say, "Oh, gosh, I have to face this client or that challenge." But overall, it was loving the business I was in, and the people in that business, and feeling that adrenaline. And yes, I loved doing that.Q. What's next for you?A. Who knows! (Laughs.) I have no idea. I love The Three Tomatoes. That's the thing I'm having the most fun with these days. I'm spending a lot of time on it, and we'll see where that takes me. I started out teaching, so kids and education have always been very important to me. So, I've become very involved with a couple of non-profit groups that work with New York kids and education. That has fulfilled that other piece of me. And, that goes back to figuring out what has been important to you all along. Look at what you are passionate about.````````````````````````````````````````

Wanted: Baby Boomer Teachers!

Today, there is a greater demand for teachers nationwide than there has been in many years.  Of course, there is not an equal demand for every teacher in every specialty, but there is a tremendous need for teachers precisely because so many baby boomers are leaving the teaching profession due to retirement.  This development, in turn, offers a great opportunity for other men and women, who are also baby boomers, to take those positions from the retiring teachers.

Let me give you an example.  A person who came into the picture as a substitute high school math teacher for our then junior in high school the following year joined the staff of Woodstock High School and became a full-time math teacher in her late 50s.  I believe this is the type of transition our nation will see happen with greater frequency all across America.

In the past, my mother also went back to school to finish her Associate of Arts degree in her early 40s.  Then, she earned her Bachelor's degree, received her Master's degree, and subsequently taught high school photography through the age of 70 at Parkway South High School in St. Louis County, Missouri.

And while the individual paycheck may not be significant relative to private industry, public sector pensions for teachers are really excellent.  For example, the formula in the State of Missouri for a retired teacher is 80% of your previous income after 30 years of service.  Teachers are paid a salary based upon their education level, with the max pay level probably being a Master's degree plus 30 hours.

In my own circle, I have a good friend in St. Louis, who earned a Master's degree plus 30 hours, and let us estimate that he retired at $60,000 in annual income from his Suburban St. Louis position.  His retirement at 30 years would be 80% of that figure.  However, since he actually worked 33 years, the percentage on the retirement formula was 88%.  So, by taking 88% of $60,000, my friend made approximately $52,800 per year, which began at age 55.

Please bear in mind that teachers throughout our nation do NOT qualify for Social Security.  So this becomes both a substitute for Social Security and a private pension added together.

But, if someone goes back to school and they qualify to become a teacher in their 40s, they could still work for the next 20 or 25 years.  In other words, taking my mother's case as an example, age 45 + 25 years = age 70.

The school districts, in turn, want good teachers, so they may continue to extend that teacher's contract even beyond the normal retirement point, if it's appropriate in a unique circumstance.

Continuing adult education instructor

One of my best friends from St. Louis retired as a public school teacher in mathematics after a 33 year career in a suburban high school.  But, his real love has always been music over the years.  So each week, he takes a one hour lesson on the mandolin and a one hour lesson on the guitar.

Then, at the local junior college during both the fall and spring semesters, he teaches a class on guitar.  He said he doesn't make much money doing it, but it's very gratifying to him on an emotional level.

Ministry

Individual men and women may also feel the call to ministry later in life.  That scenario pertained to my own father and my wife. My father went to seminary and graduated in his mid 40s and went on to a longer term career in the ministry.  My book, "Now What?  Discovering Your New Life and Career After 50," contains 19 profiles, one of which is of my 85 year old father.  My Dad is literally the senior associate pastor -- senior meaning oldest -- on the staff of St. Louis Family Church, which is perhaps the largest Protestant church in the Greater St. Louis area.

Ministry today is actually a common career track for men and women, as we get older.  This happens with Catholic priests, it happens in the Protestant clergy and it happens in the Jewish clergy as well.  My wife is also an ordained pastor, who is a full-time minister in charge of Fresh Harvest Church in Woodstock, Illinois and who is also the point person for Fresh Harvest Ministries.  She is also involved with a ministry organization, which has a call to our nation and is located in Washington D.C.

Fitness trainer

I am also a member of the McHenry County College Fitness Center, which has every kind of conceivable exercise machine you can imagine from rowing machines to stationary bicycles to treadmills to a cross country ski apparatus, as well as all sorts of different weight-related machines.  MCC's Fitness Center employs fitness coaches, who have degrees, and these trainers come in all different ages.  The oldest one, who once served as a coach for one of the Olympic teams, is today in his 70s.  But, he still works on a part-time basis at McHenry County College in the fitness center.

I believe fitness should be one part of the transition we pursue, as we get older.  In fact, many of the people in my exercise group, who work out three to five days per week at the same time in the early morning, when I use the facility, are actually in their late 60s, 70s or even 80s.  The name of this group is "the Wild Bunch," where I am perhaps the youngest person in the group.

Of course, it is always good to be "the youngest," no matter how the group is defined.

Firefighting: For the Love of a Career

When you see the glow of joy on the face of children when they get to go to a fire hall, get into one of the shiny red trucks, and enjoy watching them respond to calls, you do not always think that these children will end up making this their life goal and their lifelong love.

Captain Scott Sedore was just such a child.  He grew up just north of Newmarket in small town Queensville, and he became a volunteer firefighter as soon as he turned 18 years old.

He said, “I never wanted to do anything other than to be a firefighter!  All through high school I knew what I wanted to do.  All my friends were taking courses to prepare for university or college and I was taking subjects like scuba diving and rock climbing.

It drove my mother crazy.  She was of the mindset that I should attend university and get a degree.”

He enjoyed the fact that the fire department was a paramilitary organization;  respect for this structure is the cornerstone of the culture of a fire department.  The fire department was what he wanted in a career.  He wanted to work as a team member, be one of a brotherhood and he wanted a career where not one day would be the same as the preceding one.  Scott loved the challenge of not being sure what the next day would hold, what it would ask of him.  It could be as varied as rescuing a cat from a tree or extricating a person from a vehicle.

Scott said, “People ask all the time what a typical day is for us at the fire hall?  There is no typical day.  That is what I love about the “job”.  It never gets dull or boring.  We work the 24-hour shift, which mean we report on duty at 7 a.m. and for the next 24 hours, who knows!  The station I work out of runs 40% of the calls.  Plus, we back up a number of stations if emergency dictates.  There never seems to be enough hours in a day to get everything done.  Our morning coffee meeting is very important.  That is where the crew sits down and discusses what we did on off days.  It is important to have a laugh or to commiserate with a crewmate if there has been a mishap.  We decide on what training we will embark on next and also discuss who is cooking supper.  Then the tones go off and off we go.  Where that will be, we never know ahead.”

All an applicant needed when he started was to have a grade 12 Diploma, a D license, first aid and CPR.  Anything else was considered icing on the cake.  He had been a volunteer firefighter, a certified diver, a rock climber and had a few college courses related to firefighting.  Twenty-one years later, the learning is still going on.  He is currently enrolled at Dalhousie University, halfway through

The Company Officer Program at the Ontario Fire College and working on a certificateat George Brown College for Emergency Preparedness.  He has never stopped learning or training.  The fire department spends countless hours training on new equipment and maintaining skills.

“I’m living my dream.” He reminisced.  “I remember walking in the door at Station 81,

our headquarters for six weeks of training before being assigned to a crew.”

He was twenty years old.  He was so excited he arrived an hour early and that excitement and that habit has stayed with him all these years.  “If I’m not walking through the door

thirty minutes early for my shift, I think I’m late.”

He was assigned to Station 83 under Captain Blair Robson, a rough looking stocky pipe-smoking guy.  He found that looks were very deceiving.  Captain Robson taught him how to relax and breath.

Scott said, “I can remember him being so calm at calls and around the station.  He would tell me that cooler heads prevail and will always get the job done right.  I hold that

thought close today.  When I look back I can’t believe how long ago that was and how much I enjoy this job!  I have seen a lot of change from our turnout gear to the response vehicles we use.  I find it hard to believe I used to ride on a tail board engine wearing the old pull up boots and long coat!”

When Scott Sedore became Captain, he wanted to do more for the community and the people he served.  He was fortunate to work with a like-minded crew and a Platoon Chief who supported them all the way.  One Halloween they carved pumpkins, then distributed candies at a street corner to the trick or treaters.  This led the crew to read to school kids at Christmas, wearing elf hats and giving out candy canes.  Later the crew got involved with L’Arche Daybreak, a home for challenged adults.  They found it to be a very heart-warming place to visit.

“We go by to say hello and see what their friends are making at the craft studio get involved in their bowl-a-thon and have hosted BBQ’s for the families and friends of Daybreak.” Scott said.  His crew has entered two floats in the Richmond Hill Santa Claus Parade for the past four years.  They have won the Optimist Award twice and this year they won the Best Theme Float.

Scott continues, “Any time that my crew has the opportunity to get involved in the community we jump at the chance because we see the excitement in not only the children, but in their parents as well.  It is also a great time to get a safety message across.”

He became Captain of Company One, Richmond Hill Fire Department in 2002.  He said,

“My crew members are exceptional and perform diligently, taking seriously their responsibilities as firefighters, and also the community involvement I ask of them.  They are eager to be involved and be the helping hands in the community.  Behind every Captain is a responsive, adaptable and hard working crew.”

He is quick to say that his Acting Captain and the crew embody the same determination, the community involvement and the dedication, not only to the job but to the public that he has.

Captain Scott Sedore has recently been presented the “Fire Chief’s Award” at the annual Firefighters Awards Dinner by Commissioner Shane Baker for his excellent performance of duty and his dedication to effecting customer service, continuously promoting the Richmond Hill Fire department within the community and leading others to improve public service in an exemplary manner.

What makes him an outstanding Captain are his leadership skills, his ability to stay calm in all situations, his compassion when it is needed most, such as when the call becomes a recovery rather than a rescue.  He exhibits a love for people, his community and most of all, for his career choice.  He says unequivocally, “I just love my job.  It is still my dream job.  The best job I could ever have had!”

Making it Work: Balancing Career and Family

Balancing a job and a family has always been a challenge for working parents. During the downturn, however, this has become even more of a juggling act as pay freezes, increased workloads and redundancies pile extra pressure on parents' time and earning capacity.
A common obstacle that parents in the UK face is a lack of flexibility in the workplace. According to a recent CBI study, only 20% of companies in the country have family-friendly policies. The rest, it seems, are focusing on the bottom line instead of the individual needs of their staff.
UK labour law does give certain parents the right to request flexible working, including those with children under the age of six or disabled children under the age of 18. However, employers are not obliged to agree to these requests, but must consider them seriously, reports the BBC.
New maternity and paternity leave laws
In order to provide more support for working parents, the government is introducing new legislation, which will give parents more choice and flexibility as to how they use their leave.
According to Harriet Harman, Minister for Women and Equality, mothers will be able to transfer the last six months of their maternity leave to the father, with three months paid.
"This gives families radically more choice and flexibility in how they balance work and care of children, and enables fathers to play a bigger part in bringing up their children," she said.
The scheme is due to start in April 2011. At present, however, statutory maternity and paternity payments are less than the minimum wage, which means a lot of fathers and mothers from low-income households are going back to work sooner than they would like.
Working out of necessity rather than choice
The CBI reports that over 70% of mothers in the UK return to work after taking maternity leave. While it could be said that these working mothers 'have it all', a significant number of them are choosing flexibility over job satisfaction.
In fact, a recent study by WorkingMums.co.uk found that a staggering 88% of mothers who work have opted for roles below their skill level. Around 63% said they were putting their career aspirations on hold and choosing jobs that allow them more flexibility to balance work and family life.
One respondent reported giving up a job as a finance manager after having her third child because she could not afford full-time childcare and her employer allowed no flexibility in her position. She now works for the same company as a part-time administrative assistant.
Others were more fortunate. One said that after taking an 8-year career break to concentrate on being a mum, she found a job in her chosen field that offered flexible hours.
"I have also been approached by a previous employer and have been able to negotiate a 1-day a week equivalent on a consultancy basis," she said.
Family-focused workplaces
As an alternative to flexible working hours, some family-friendly workplaces offer on-site childcare facilities, which allow their employees to follow their careers and still be there for their children.
Vikki Grimes, a training manager at Microsoft, said having her sons at her firm's on-site crèche, which is just 50 yards from her desk, made her life easier.
"They know where you are and if they need you, you can be there in seconds," she explained.
American Express UK is another company with on-site childcare and a family-friendly approach. Around 30% of the company's employees have flexible working arrangements and parents on staff benefit from enhanced pay for maternity, paternity and adoption leave. As a result, the firm enjoys a return-to-work rate of almost 90% (up from 75% in 2007), reports HR Magazine.
Today's childcare options
Around 340,000 parents in the UK currently benefit from tax breaks on childcare vouchers, which equate to a 31% saving on the first £243 spent on childcare costs each month for basic rate taxpayers, or 51% for higher rate ones.
However, the government is planning to put an end to this tax relief scheme by 2015. The reason for ending the programme is to use the money to provide 40% of two-year-olds with 10 hours of free childcare a week on a means-tested basis.
The Press Association reports that more than 22,000 parents are calling on the government to abandon this plan.
According to Simon Moore, managing director of Computershare Voucher Services, the UK's largest provider of vouchers, said the outrage expressed by working parents has been "phenomenal".
"These vouchers are a real benefit to hundreds of thousands of hardworking parents... I am not at all surprised that parents are protesting against this cut," he said.
While certain families are set to benefit from this move, the remaining parents will have to reassess their childcare options.
Nanny-share schemes
While most people believe that hiring a nanny is a privilege reserved for an elite few, a growing number of working parents are defying this assumption by entering into nanny share schemes. These involve two or more families pooling the cost of hiring a nanny instead of sending their children to a nursery or giving up work to care for them.
The nannies either share their hours between the families, or bring all the children together in the same house. This means parents pay less for the same amount of childcare hours and nannies benefit from a higher combined income.
According to the Guardian, agencies that specialise in matching nannies to a pair or group of families have seen a boom in business during the downturn.
Nannies are welcoming the trend, too. Lisa Wilkins, a nanny working in South London, said she prefers sharing her time between two families and added that a wider variety of families could now afford her services.
"More people can have the best type of care for their child," she said.
Fiona Jull, a mother who lives in Wandsworth, opted for a nanny-share arrangement when she returned to work.
"I looked at having a nanny but realised it would cost half my salary, so I decided to share. I found a family - through a website - around the corner. I drop my son off two days a week and he's here two days a week," she said.
Are children of working parents at a disadvantage?
Adding to the pressures of being a working parent is the guilt that one's children are not getting a balanced upbringing.
A recent study conducted by Institute of Child Health, found that five-year-olds whose mothers worked part- or full-time were more likely to consume sweetened drinks between meals, watch more television, use their computers more often, and catch a lift to school instead of walking or riding their bikes when compared with those children who had 'stay-at-home moms'.
Professor Catherine Law, who led the study, told the BBC that fathers were not taken into account as their employment levels had not changed, whereas the numbers of working mothers had increased significantly in recent years.
"Our results do not imply that mothers should not work. Rather they highlight the need for policies and programmes to help support parents," she added.
Experts have called for more research on the subject and numerous working mothers insist it is possible to earn a living, feed one's children healthy food and ensure they exercise - all it requires is a healthy attitude.
Lorraine Candy, Editor-in-Chief of fashion magazine Elle, believes that working parents raise well-balanced children.
"I work in an industry populated with young people - many of them the proud produce of working mums. They are smart, ambitious, intelligent and grounded. They are inquisitive and engaged with the world. They are, above all, super-confident... Many of those I work with cite their parents as role models, especially their working mums," she said.
It seems as if a significant number of mothers and fathers in the UK are managing to earn a living and find innovative ways to provide their children with all the care, attention and guidance they need - and these working parents deserve more support from their peers, employers and government.

I involve suggestion, Sexual Harassment at work.? There are many locations that my company works in. Well, when I be fairly new here, they hired a guy and he be kind of a fill within at whatever location we needed him to go to for the sunshine. Well it didnt take long for him to get my phone number from the emergency ring sheet. So he called one night and said to get together 4 drinks, I told him no bc I dont know you. I didnt see him at my location 4 a few days, and then 1 day he come in my office and closed/locked the door and put his arms on respectively one of the chair arm rests that I was sitting contained by, and told me I should want to go out with him, and I said no bc I dont trust u and he said...u dont trust me? or u dont trust yourself? So thats when it really started getting wierd, but i blew it bad. Next, I was walking down the hall and he passed me, and grab my butt, I told him dont touch me again. Then, I was on my way to work and he newly happened to be driving next to me, and he be telling me to pull over so he could kiss me and touch me. This is when I started debating on whether or not to relate my boss, which is his boss too. The final straw was when I was home one darkness and he called my phone as private and when I answered he said he was within the shower and if I could come "help" him. So I hung up, and called the phone company to change my number...while I be doing that, he was calling me back, departure me messages telling me to answer bc he needed to hear my voice in proclaim to "finish." And sent me a picture message of the "proof". Well I saved the messages and decided to detail my boss asap. Well I just happened to start my leave the day that it happened so I arranged to wait a couple of days until I could go and sit down beside him. By the time was back from vac., one of the empire told me...that guy got arrested for violating probabtion and have to do time for a year before hell get out. Finally, i didnt enjoy to worry about it, i never told anyone to free the embarrassment and drama. Well its been a year and i basically found out that they rehired him! I talked to my boss and told him everything and he said, u should have told me early...I already hired him. So I told the HR guy, and he said ok I'll handle it, he wont work at your location. Well the same hours of daylight he told me that, he showed up! He walked in my bureau like nithing ever happened and said your still here...? Arent you working a moment or two late? Which I though was an abnormal greeting after not seeing each other for a whole year. Well I not here immediately. I called the HR guy, and I said what happen?! And he said he was overwritten by the operations guy and that he be going to work there. He also said that he cant really do much about allegations a year ago since I never told anyone to originate with and he also has to protect his rights to enjoy a stable job. He said since hes already hired theyre going to give him another randomness and THEN if he does something theyll fire him. Is what he is saying accurate? I even told HR that he doesnt have to fire him, but I why they cant distribute someone else over here instead and keep him away from me. Is that it? Now I just sit and linger for him to "do" something...and hope its not too traumatizing? I know it was a year ago and I never told anyone but this still doesnt seem right. Is it? Oh! and the HR guy said, besides hes on parole and he cant afford a 3rd strike...so im pretty sure he wont do anything! Also, I dont even know what he be arrested for.**How do you write a Resume?**? IF u are working surrounded by those field or HAVE A CAREER that u REALLY like plzz share it beside me, and tell me all almost it thanxxx <33! ps if u have to email me[Career in] picture, or psychology? I'm down to those two choices, for now at least. For a while I've looked-for to go into psychology, because I just love to lend a hand, and I understand a lot of people's problems, even though I hardly know the "official" reasons and everything. In other words, I kind of purely relate to what's on people's minds, and understand personally how they have a feeling and what to do about it (what to tell yourself). So it's a bit more of a philosophy than anything, but still. I love the perception of being able to aid people, especially kids, who come in for anything at adjectives. Recently, however, I started to get into film. I'm within a sort of film class in my institution, and started using my older brother's programs that he left down when he enlisted to the army recently, when I fell upon Adobe After Effects 6.5. An elder version, and I haven't the slightest idea how to use it, which sucks since adjectives of the tutorials available today are for the newer versions which cost around $1,000 dollars, which is WAY beyong my budget. Than there are other things to support me improve, which also cost a considerably high amount of money. So the key problem is that if I decide to enter a career surrounded by film now, than money probably shouldn't be anything to stop me. But I wouldn't own wanted to waste adjectives that money for a few school projects this year if I'm never going to use it again. In that case, I would want to pursue a job in psychology. Anyhow, I would appreciate any comments from you guys to maybe relief me make a decision, so that I can see more extremely into both choices, since, like I said, I hardly know anything just about either field.--|-- Job warning. --|-- All assistance appreciated, possibly Psychology/Criminology and/or Police tips please? I would like to go and do a scope in Psychology prehaps with criminology or politics combined, and later join the police. I wondered if anyone had any planning or experiences in any of this, as I'm a bit confused how to get here. I have also been told I am 'wasting' my intelligence. I am clever (not to nouns boastful here.) and I wondered if following this career path will bore me? I desperately don't want to devote my natural life to studying, and I want to do something that will test me, be benificial to society, and will involve working with populace, as I am very much a people party. If anyone has any ideas or proposal it would be much appreciated. More careers questions please visit : JobQnA.com

Career in Special Education

 By Sadaket Malik

Special education is the education of students with special needs in a way that addresses the student’s individual differences and needs. Ideally, this process involves the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of teaching procedures, adapted equipment and materials, accessible settings, and other interventions designed to help learners with special needs achieve a higher level of personal self-sufficiency and success in school and community than would be available if the student were only given access to a typical classroom education.

Common special needs include learning disability, communication challenges, emotional and behavioral disorders, physical disabilities, and developmental disabilities.[1] Students with these kinds of disabilities are likely to benefit from additional educational services, different approaches to teaching, and use of technology.

Intellectual giftedness is a difference in learning and can also benefit from specialized teaching techniques or different educational programs, but the term "special education" is generally used to specifically indicate instruction of students whose special needs reduce their ability to learn independently or in a classroom, and gifted education is handled separately.

Special education can be an extraordinarily rewarding career for the right person. It takes someone with a great deal of patience, a love of children, and a thick skin to deal with difficult problems. But as in any field, the jobs with the greatest challenges tend to offer the highest rewards.

You want a career that allows you to help others. Being a special educator allows you to make a positive difference in the lives of children with disabilities. With the help of special educators, an increasing number of children with disabilities have succeeded in school and enrolled in college.

Being a special educator gives you the opportunity to use many talents and skills creatively and to grow both professionally and personally.

The need for special education professionals has never been greater. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the need for qualified special educators and related service personnel will increase "faster than most other professions" in the next 10 years. And the U.S. Department of Education reports "The number of students with disabilities served under IDEA continues to increase at a rate higher than both the general population and school enrollment." Read about the need for special education professionals. The personal rewards of educating children and youth with disabilities is greater than you can ever imagine.

These days many schools and universities across the country are making efforts in teacher education reform in order to better the training of instructors, educators and therefore the education of children. Besides this, factors like reduced class sizes and an increase in the number of students are also forcing many schools to acquire teachers who have skills to handle every student effectively.       Looking at the present scenario, educators or teachers require special skills that can be nurtured through intensive training. Addressing to meet this demand, special education degrees have increased its popularity in recent years. So, if you are already involved in this teaching profession and wish to advance your career in the education leadership, a special education degree is a necessity. Today where teaching is considered as a highly noble profession, attaining a degree in special education can enhance your teaching career. A special education program can even help you learn special skills including understanding diversity, teaching reading literacy, counseling and special education. During this course, you will receive training and educational information that educates you how to translate the knowledge to the students. Once you complete this special education program, you will be able to make decisions and take a stand on political issues that affect education and learning. Another good thing about this degree program is that it gives teachers more opportunities in private schools and universities. This special education course provides you with one of the most convenient ways to gain higher income and greater career opportunities in the field of education. Today, in fact many of the employed teaching professionals looking to advance their career to leadership roles like principal or dean are considering attaining a degree in special education. There are lots of institutions and schools that offer degree programs in special education. They can vary from student behavior management, institutionalized learning methods, student-teacher supervision, specific areas and solutions for effective child education and more.Enjoying a better salary and job security, today a special education degree can put you at an advantage and may boost your career path. It is one of the best options for all those who are planning for career advancement in education.

In the last few years the requirement for qualified educators has boomed rapidly. In fact, with the rise in education standards and the number of educational institutes and schools, the education industry expects to look for more qualified educators in the coming years. Today, we cannot deny the fact that education is an extremely rewarding career field but currently it demands more qualified teachers to educate children at the elementary school or college level.

Looking at the present scenario, educators or teachers require special skills that can be nurtured through intensive training. Addressing to meet this demand, special education degrees have increased its popularity in recent years. So, if you are already involved in this teaching profession and wish to advance your career in the education leadership, a special teaching degree is a necessity.

There are lots of institutions and schools that offer degree programs in special teaching. They can vary from student behavior management, institutionalized learning methods, student-teacher supervision, specific areas and solutions for effective child education and more.                 The popular national level institutes for disabled persons are the National institute for Hearing Handicapped, National Institute for the Mentally Handicapped, National Institute of the Visually Handicapped and National Institute for orthopedically handicapped. National Institute of Rehabilitation, Training and Research and The Institute for Physically Handicapped are other two national level institutes run by government.

Moreover, government has initiated District Rehabilitation Centre (DRC) scheme in ten states to make all-inclusive rehabilitation. Moreover, four Regional Rehabilitation Training Centers are there to train the staff and teachers who work with these institutes.Today due to global competitiveness, education scenario in India is fast changing. Along with that, special education is also catching importance and various government agencies are working hard to make it available to masses. There are almost 37 diploma courses in the field of special education in India some of the institutes offer courses like B.Ed as well. All these courses are regulated and governed by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI)- a legislative body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. However over the years many scholars have questioned the importance of special education in India as they feel that it leads to segregation and isolation of the differently abled children. They argue that by segregating the children at young age the very purpose bringing all children to the mainstream of, the purpose of special education is defeated.

There are Lucrative Careers in Trades and Labor

As the old saying goes your home is your castle. Whether you are building, improving, or just maintaining your home, many tradesmen or women will be assisting you to that end. When such a valuable asset is being worked on by another, quality is one of your foremost concerns. This quality comes from knowledge and experience in ones field as well as a certain amount of self respect and pride in ones work. Unfortunately, previous generations regarded these jobs with more respect, which has precipitated a collapse in the size of our younger labor pool. “Over the past ten years construction workers in the 20-30 age group declined from 40.5 percent to 26.5 percent. The percentage of workers in the 41-50 age group increased from 18 to 26 percent”(1).

Labor drying up has made it so “contractors of all sizes are on their own, forced to recruit and train on an individual basis. This is an ineffective process and cost prohibitive” (1). In a time when fewer workers are entering the market the industry is poised for growth. This gives employers fewer choices, causes them to settle for lower standards in workers and service, and allows competitors to gain market share who are willing to compromise service standards even further. “If companies want to fill their vacant positions, they might have to loosen up their hiring standards, too, said Jim Mize, manager of employer outreach at Pima County One-Stop Career Center”(5). Does this seem unfair for the consumer with their castle and the honest hard working Americans that have pride in their work?

Most high school students have no idea what one can earn by learning a trade, “A journeyman generally earns between $28 and $32 an hour (up to $64,000 a year)--a pretty nice wage for a 23-year-old. Most states require a plumber to have 2 to 10 years of experience at the apprentice level to qualify as a journeyman. My neighbor attended a trade school. He is a tool and die maker. He learned the skill in night classes. After spending time as an apprentice, he opened his own shop. It is now a multi-million dollar business” (3,4). A competent person learning a skilled trade can easily achieve the American dream. We at 10 best Tucson are on a mission to find the best home service professionals in Tucson and share them with the community. By uniting community officials and business leaders under the common goal of higher quality trades in the labor pool, the ability for honest companies to grow without compromising their excellent service records will be achievable. Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao recently announced her “Skills to Build America’s Future” initiative. It “will reach out to a new generation of tradesmen and women and encourage them to use their skills and talents to find careers that will help to pave the way to a fulfilling career and bright financial future” (Doleta).

This message must be made clear to the future of our local labor market and to current workers who are considering changing careers. These skills that are currently cultivated by a unique few are ones to be proud of, and can be quite lucrative as well. Becoming a journeyman and with an entrepreneurial co-education or an enterprising spirit practically ensures an exalted status of financial wealth. These are pragmatic messages that must be presented to our youth. Our businesses can grow while maintaining their integrity and providing the absolute best possible service to home owners and customers. They deserve it. Keep a watchful eye on this topic. 10 best Tucson will be the catalyst for change.

Questions and Answers About Career Transitions

Q: Who is James O. Armstrong?I am an author of a book about career transitions for baby boomers which came out last spring.  The name of the book is "Now What?  Discovering Your New Life and Career After 50."  The book is being sold at retail bookstores and by virtually every online bookstore in the U.S. today and in Canada.  In addition, I'm a website entrepreneur, where my focus is on job transitions for men and women over age 40, as well as on subjects like college and training options, relocating, volunteering and other subjects of interest to baby boomers and younger seniors as we transition into the next chapter of our lives.  I am also the President of James Armstrong & Associates, Inc., which is a northwest suburban Chicago national and international media representation firm.  Today I see my role as being one of speaking hope into my generation of fellow baby boomers that the best may be yet to come instead of past tense.  Men and women today are visiting our website which is http://www.NowWhatJobs.net because they probably just lost a job or a loved one, friend or neighbor just lost a job.  And, they are beginning to look for answers that make sense going forward into the next chapter of their lives.Q: What challenges have you faced that reflect what you just talked about –- in terms of speaking hope to your generation?During the 1990s, I personally went through three reorganization or downsizing exercises, which put me into the position of needing to find a new job.  In each case, I emerged victorious from that search process.  In addition to those personal experiences, I should also point out that over the past 30 years I have had an extensive amount of experience as a marketing consultant with all sorts of economic development organizations in the United States and Canada.  Those organizations have included foreign countries, states and provinces, cities, regional chambers of commerce, economic development corporations and partnerships, ports and airports, real estate developers, commercial real estate companies, builders and engineering companies, among other companies in this market niche.Q: Have you reinvented yourself, and if so how?Early in my career in the media industry, I discovered that the sales career path was significantly different than the editorial or creative direction.  Specifically, my sales and marketing direction led me to a 13 year employee status with BusinessWeek Magazine, where I was a national and international account manager.  It also led me to an eight year career with Industry Week Magazine, where I served as Director of Economic Development among other responsibilities.  And it resulted in recent years in an involvement with The Financial Times of London in the Midwest with selected accounts and working on special reports.  Beyond those assignments, I have also functioned as the Director of Economic Development for a series of magazines, including my current assignment at Inbound Logistics, which is the leading logistics and global trade magazine in North America in editorial and advertising pages.  This background has also allowed me to interact with people up to and including governors of states, lieutenant governors and directors of commerce or departments of economic development.  These individuals tend to be cabinet level officers covering the economic development or commerce department area for states throughout the United States.Q: What would you say to someone who has career anxiety?I believe those anxieties are certainly justified, but perhaps magnified unnecessarily by the national media, which tends to provide an incomplete picture of what is happening in the jobs and career area in the United States.  Specifically, the major TV networks and big city daily newspapers in the U.S. especially tend to focus on layoffs that occur in large companies.  As a result, men and women get the misimpression that jobs are constantly decreasing, when in fact the small business sector is busy generating jobs in our economy.  Government at all levels also has job opportunities.  The healthcare sector, including dental health in such areas as dental hygienists, is also creating jobs for our society.  And, so, we need to focus on where the jobs are available and not where some large company eliminated 3,000 jobs yesterday.  Look at the total picture in regard to the job situation in America and elsewhere.  The simple truth of the matter is there is a labor shortage in America and there is especially a skills shortage, which will become increasingly critical in the years to come.  Q: Tell us about an obstacle that you faced in your career and how you overcame that. When my office closed at BusinessWeek Magazine in St. Louis, I wound up exploring other options in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.  Then, I wound up moving to Chicago because no similar jobs were available at that time in the St. Louis area.  That was a successful transition, but I had to be willing to move physically and I had to be willing to explore options at another national magazine other than my current employer, whether I wanted to do so or not, for the sake of the financial needs of my family.  In other words, by being willing to move to Chicago, I was able to take care of the needs of my family.  The follow through in this process meant that I had to demonstrate flexibility plus a willingness to do whatever it would take to get the job done.Q: Someone says to you, "What can I do right now to help my career?"More education is always an option even if that means going to a truck driver training school for six weeks to become a truck driver.  The income levels you're talking about there range from perhaps $35,000 to $75,000 a year as a truck driver, depending on how many hours you're driving each year and several other factors.  But, the opportunities are there in that area just as they exist in warehousing and some types of manufacturing jobs.  It's all about being willing to explore options that perhaps you haven't considered in the past.  You may even conclude that today is the day to begin exploring those options.Q: Tell us a little about your book, "Now What?"My book profiles 19 men and women from all over the U.S. in all sorts of different jobs and career paths, at all different ages ranging from early 50s to 85 years old and with the fullest possible range of educational levels.  Each of the transitions for these men and women were successful.  As a result, the stories are inspiring to other men and women, especially those in difficult circumstances.  For someone who has been feeling a little down in the mouth lately or might be anticipating a transition in careers coming up soon, the book would make an ideal purchase.Q: Someone tells you, "I see a transition coming up on the horizon.  What would you say to me?"You need to start planning now for what your strategy will be.  The biggest point is not to simply send a resume out once or twice a week, but to work hard in the job transition process just like you have worked full-time in the past.  To land a new job, make sure to interact with friends of yours from the industry, with vendors that you've known over a period of time, while developing a database program in your computer, and keeping track of people you've contacted, including what they had to say, and then getting back to them with appropriate follow-up correspondence.  That effort includes your resume and letters of endorsement of you as a person.  By the way, your resume needs to cite specific accomplishments in terms of what you actually achieved in the job while you were there, because everyone wants to hire someone who is outstanding.  If 10 people have the very same experience and the same education, the one that actually accomplished something while he or she was in the position will be selected. Q: Someone says to you, "Jim, I cannot do it.  I want to give up."Well, if you do give up, then that becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy where the end conclusion is failure.  So, if you want to fail, then simply don't make any effort.  If that's your disposition, then there's nothing I can say or do to make you think or act differently.  But, if you're willing to make an effort, the more effort you make, the better will be the outcome.  If you choose to contact 20 different prospects every day and follow through with the appropriate correspondence, that's the kind of aggressive approach you need to take as compared to a passive effort, which might only include contacting perhaps one or two people per week.  More contact is the better approach and interacting with people who you know, including friends and neighbors, and men and women in the same company or industry, plus vendors to your former company will all be part of a winning process.  Q: Someone says to you, "I know there aren't any jobs in this town, but all my family and friends are here.  And I'm even taking care of an aging parent here."Everything has to be taken into consideration.  If you can afford not to work in the future, then the aging parent consideration might become foremost.  But if you have to continue to receive a paycheck, then you may want to consider moving to where jobs are more plentiful, such as the Rocky Mountain states.  The unemployment rate there typically falls into the two to three percent range.  Q: "But my kids are in high school here."That's unfortunate.  But having a job is more important than where your kids are in high school.  Flexibility in terms of pursuing all your options is very important to your ultimate success.Q: Why did you decide to devote so much of your life to helping your fellow baby boomers?I believe it's a calling which the Lord has given to me.

7 Outdated Myths That Will Kill Your Career Change Before You Start

If you're a career-changing Baby Boomer, you may feel like you've gotten lost with Dorothy in Oz. You've achieved success in your career. You've built skills and a strong work ethic. And now you're ready to move on...and it's not working.
Many of my own clients tell me, "I haven't had to look for a job for 20 years."
Twenty years ago, you probably didn't have a cell phone or an email account. A worm was something you put on a fish hook and a virus was something you caught from visiting friends. You could bring your whole set of kitchen knives onto an airplane and gas prices...well, we won't go there.
And career counselors were handing out tests that promised to predict our aptitude and attitude.
Today as many as 90% of workers wish they could find a new career, but few actually succeed. Most are held back because they're still guiding their progress by what they learned when they begin their careers, 20, 30 or 40 years ago.
Myth #1: Science supports the traditional linear career change model: test for interests, identify careers and go find a job.
Reality #1: You probably discovered this idea in a self-help book. Maybe you hired a career counselor. But it doesn't work. Clients often call me because they're stuck in the first stage: looking inward for guidance. They take tests and contemplate "what I really want."
But researchers at Stanford and Harvard have found that career exploration proceeds in a zig-zag trial-and-error path. The word "serendipity" has been used in mainstream career research journals. Action, not introspection, is the key.
Myth #2: Starting a business is riskier than seeking a new job.
Reality #2: I would never tell anyone, "Stop job hunting and start your own entrepreneurial venture!" But these days, I recommend moving in parallel paths. Keep looking for a job but get serious about self-employment.
If you have a high profile in your industry or community, you may have trouble getting hired - but you might find yourself in demand as a self-employed business person. And if you're above a certain age, you may meet resistance from the traditional job market.
Myth #3: Skills that brought you career success are the same skills you need for career change.
Reality #3: Career and business achievement calls for football skills: teamwork, planning and playing your position. You get rewarded for being in the right place at the right time.
But career change typically happens like playground basketball. Your biggest successes will be unplanned. The rules change and if you want a team, you will have to find them -- or even hire them.
Myth #4: Ignore unexpected thoughts like, "Maybe it's time to move." They'll soon go away.
Reality #4: These hints come from your intuition, which is not a woo-woo concept but a reliable source of insight that has been recognized by mainstream psychologists and scientists. When you ignore these whispers, you may find yourself sabotaging your own success.
Myth #5: Make tough career decisions like business decisions: run the numbers.
Reality #5: In my experience, career decisions follow their own logic. You develop scenarios and stories. You ask, "Can I live with my worst case scenario? If not, what can I do now to avoid having this scenario unfold?"
Myth #6: Fear is a signal to stay where you are, not challenge the status quo.
Reality #6: Contemporary psychologists recognize that fear can be your friend, especially when you're moving outside your comfort zone into a new adventure. Fear means you're taking care of yourself as you move into the unknown.
Sometimes you will work in and through the fear. And sometimes you experience fear for a good reason: time to gather more information before moving ahead.
Myth #7: Career change means feeling stressed and miserable.
Reality #7: Career change can become a source of meaning and growth. Most people look back with gratitude on this time in their lives.
As you progress, you begin to feel strong and powerful. You recognize more and more of what you want. The magic happens when you connect with a glimpse of, "This could be good."
